Seed Opinions?

Anyone prefer Pennington over Scotts or vice versa? What do you all think of these brands? I have heard some talk about not buying from big box stores which I assume is Lowe's and Home Depot? What is a quality grass seed brand?

RE: Seed Opinions?

It all depends on the cultivars that are listed on the bag. The best seed comes from seed sellers, either local ones, or internet sources. Pennington tall fescue blends in Home Depot are some of the better ones offered. Scott's uses the Watersmart coating which is somewhat gimmicky and you end up spending more money as half of the weight in the bag is the coating. I would stay away from Vigoro brand. Lesco sometimes sells TF blends at the big box stores. Their cultivars are pretty good as well. The best seeds are the ones that perform best in your area, and have the qualities that you are looking for. Head on over to www.ntep.org if you want to see which ones perform the best in your area.

Ive used both as they are readily available. Had good results with scotts but last year tried Pennington and had fantastic results. This year i overseeded again with Pennington smart seed north east mix (rye/KBG/fes), so far the grass came up great. I would read the label and get a mix for your area. I believe when i read the label Pennington had less inert matter and more seed by %. Check the label and see what works best.
