I have been working on my lawn for several years now, I used Tall Fescue with heat tolerant Bluegrass. I have clay soil and after summer I have grass burnt out or died not sure wandering if topdressing with a river sand would help with clay problem. Getting ready to overseed in a few days, Iread where shampoo may help with clay is this true, trying to get lawn to thicken up. Can you buy straight heat tolerant Bluegrass wandering if I should overseed with a higher percentage since it spreads.

If the grass isn't getting enough water, then you need to water more. If it's getting plenty of water, then you probably have a fungus problem and/or grubs.

What kidhorn said is probably right. If you think you have hard soil and are not getting good penetration, then spraying with shampoo will help. The rate is 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet using any clear shampoo. Find something on sale. I found Vo5 on sail for a dollar. Spray the shampoo, follow up with an inch of irrigation (or rain), and repeat in 2 weeks. That should work for at least a year as long as it gets some sort of moisture fairly regularly.

I will try the shampoo, how much water should the yard be getting an inch a week. Also getting ready to overseed also bought a straight bag of KBG and have Hound Dog 6 Tall Fescue for about 25000 sq ft, thinking of upping KBG % what do you think I should add per pound of HounDog 6.

An option for those reocurring dead spots: you can try core aerating, removing the plugs, and topdressing with the river or a sharp sand. Use a yard rake or a drag to move the sand into the core holes. The sand should allow turf establishment, deeper rooting and better drainage/water penetration where the plug holes are and the KBG can get a foothold.
