Lawn Bare Spot Question

Hello all,

I am going to tackle filling in bare spots in my lawn this weekend. I have an easy question.

I tried Scotts Turfbuilder Sun and Shade Mix in Spring, but temperatures quickly got hotter than expected and the seeds did not take. Temperatures are great right now - mid 50-60s.

My plan was to put down Scotts Kentucky Bluegrass seed with Scotts Lawn Soil on top to hold in the moisture. However, I have heard that I can put down the seed, then use the Scotts Sun and Shade mix instead of the soil to accomplish the smae thing. Is this true? What would you recommend?

Meant to say Scotts PATCHMASTER, not Scott's Sun and Shade

I would probably not use Patchmaster since it contains grass seed, mostly perennial rye. If you want to top dress your seeds there are several things you can use such as: Pennmulch, peat moss, compost, topsoil, shredded straw, etc. When you do top dress, add just enough to cover the seeds, no more than 1/4 inch.
