| Hi,
This is my first post here, and I'm looking for help with my yard. Some details, the yard is new, our home was finished in April, we had topsoil spread in May, then had the yard seeded shortly after. The topsoil was very clumpy, but we didn't break it up, we thought it would settle out on its own. Also, both the front and back yards are sloped. So, what we have now is a very bumpy yard and it's almost entirely crabgrass. There are also a lot of rocks, although we've picked out most of the large ones. So, we're planning on how to fix this without having to rototill the whole yard. Because of the slope, the yard washes away when it's just dirt. The plan is as follows, and this is what we need help on to see if we're headed in the right direction. We'd like to use a core aerator, then saturate the yard and use a yard roller on it. Then seed and fertilize the yard again, and just wait for the crabgrass to die out. Lastly we would overseed again in the spring and use a preventative crabgrass product on it. Would this procedure work? We're open to any suggestions! Thanks! |

| Good idea...don't till. You could have someone level the yard with a box blade on a tractor but that would obviously tear everything up. Your plan may work but I don't know that from experience. I guess you will just have to try it and see. When you aerate do the yard 3 or 4 times. You may have trouble with the crabgrass not dying out very quickly and therefore competing with the seed. Next year when you seed. Wait to apply the pre-emergent until you have mowed the new grass 3 times. |

| Thanks, it's good to know we're headed in the right direction. This is the first time we are having to do anything more than mow a yard. I wish I had looked up some information sooner. We're looking into the box blade route also. |
