Hey guys, new member Steve here. My former St. Augustine lawn (I don't know what exact version of grass) in The Colony, which was full & beautiful the past few years, plus this past spring, apparently either got that root rot I have read y'all talking about here, or else (my neighbor thinks) had heavy grub worm or chinch bug damage. Nonetheless, it's all thatch, and is crackly-brown now, from mid-August thru today. My questions revolve around next year, what to do. I have never had a lawn die so completely, regardless of water, sun, heat, or anything. Do I need to dig up a patch and have a nursery look at it, to tell me what may have killed it, or will I ever know? What to look for? Then, do I leave it sit as cover over winter, wait 'til spring, roto-till it up, and re-sod the whole danged area? My lawn used to be the most full lawn in the block, now it's the brownest & crackliest in the neighborhood. Any thoughts you have will be read, absorbed, contemplated, and acted-upon. Thanks.

Steve, If you have a grub issue the grass should pull up from the soil very easily, almost like pulling up carpet. Grubs are active from about june thru october, so it could very likley be that. I would pull up a 1ft by 1ft section and dig around to see if you find any grubs.

Could you post a close up photo taken in the shade showing the dead grass. If you have any still green, close up of that, too.
