puddle of water after reseeding

Hello,

I reseeded a new lawn (Small size, 20 x 15) from scratch. I did all the Dig/pull/rake/aerate/level/roll/seed/topdress/roll/fertilize yesterday.

the entire yard is bare and no grass yet. I also have inground sprinkler, which i have set it to run for 15 minutes at 8AM, 1:30PM, 7PM.

This morning, i noticed there is a puddle of water in the middle of the yard. (about 5x5) and then i realize that I did not create the "slope" that i intended to correctly. The edge to the fence is higher than where the puddle of water is.

I want to know,

1) Since i only reseeded/fertilize yesterday, can i take a dig/rake and make the side lower, and reuse the Soil which i dig up to level up the middle where it has water?

2) if i dig again, i want to reapply seed/fertilizer at that 5x5 location - will too much seed/fertilizer kill it?

3) I bought a 20lb of sun/shade mix , and used a rotary spreader (Edgeguard Mini) to spread the seeds. This is the first time i am doing it, and i think i may have spreaded too much seed. How far away am I suppose to walk with the spreader for each pass? I was doing it literally, row by row right next to each other. And I used up almost 50% of the 20lbs bag on a 450sqft lawn. Will this be a problem? Later on, when i spread fertilizer, i saw the instruction and it says, spread it 5 feet away from each pass so it has over lap - so i only walked back and forth with 5 feet away from each other.

4) And lastly, people said its not too good to reseed before thunderstorm - I believe there is a short period of heavy rain expected on Saturday night. Which will be 48 hours after i reseeded. Will that be okay? I could not find any guideline on the web about how many hours of not to have rain/tstorm after reseed would be ideal..etc...

Thanks,

please let me know.

I will only respond to the watering schedule. I think that 15 minutes per cycle is too much water, and that is a significant reason why you are seeing the puddling. I would suggest that you apply less water per cycle, and add more cycles per day. For example, a good schedule for watering a seeded area would be to water for 5 minutes per station every other hour. Set the system to water for 5 minutes at 8am, 10am, 12noon, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm. This is the type of watering schedule I have used successfully to germinate creeping bentgrass in 3-4 days on sand/peat USGA putting greens. I know that your soil environment is much different than a USGA putting green, but my point is that you should be applying less water, more often to reduce your puddling issue and to observe a successful seed germination.

Agree. We typically talk about watering for 10 to 15 minutes but some sprinklers can put out a LOT of water in that time. The idea is to moisten the surface of the soil and then stop. If you have standing water you are watering much too much.

I would tend to try to run with what you have created and deal with the low spot next spring. It will be a matter of adding topsoil or sand. If you decide to act now, then dig the high spot away but do not put it on top of the new seed. You could smother it and not have anything. Wait until spring and sort of dust that old soil into the middle a little each week.

If the rainstorm washes it all away, then your situation is changed and you can do the whole kit and caboodle at once.
