What kind of grass or weed is this?

Hello all, I have this grass or weed, beginning to grow in patches, in my nice, lush lawn. At first I thought it was crab grass, but it lacks the redish purple at the base, and it is taller, and not as flat lying. When freshly mowed, it blends in well with the lawn, but, in the wet season, it grows much faster than the lawn, and will be inches taller than the lawn, in just a few days. Also, now that we have had a long dry spell this summer, most of my lawn is dry, and browning. But this stuff remains green, and continues to grow!? I am left with this stuff, in tall, bushy, green patches, surrounded by a drying lawn.

What is it, and how do I control it? I have used roundup on it in the front yard, and will now need to determine what to re seed in its place, to match the existing lawn. But, my large backyard is FULL of this stuff, and its not feasible to burn all this stuff down.

What is it, and how do I kill/control it? What should I replant?

You want to get rid of the green grass so your yard is uniformly brown?

We had a drought second half of summer....everyones grass is brown here, that isn't an all weed lawn. I want to get rid if this weedy grass now, so when the lawn comes back next year, it doesn't spread more. Although green, it is not a desiresble grass, to me. Thanks for the help.

I think I have narrowed it to either poa trivialis, dallisgrass, or orchard grass. Most likely the poa.

If you are in IL and your lawn is brown, then you likely have a Kentucky bluegrass lawn. Spraying a grass killer to kill one type of grass in a grass lawn is hard to do. What happens is both grasses die. But assuming you have KBG, that grass is the kind that spreads to fill in thin spots. It will come back. If you do decide to spray a grass killer (Grass-B-Gone or RoundUp), try to isolate just the weed with a cardboard mask so you minimize the damage to surrounding turf.
