10'x20' dead area in lawn

My back lawn is about 50x75'. It was renovated with topsoil and seed last year. Things were fine up to about july when this area started to look brown. Now it is completely dead. I had used scotts turfbuilder with weed control in june when the lawn looked normal.
The grass looks like a fire hazard and is loose in the soil. The wheels from my mower going over it tore it up.
My mother said it looked diseased to her. I was wondering if it is grubs.
I am not sure if raking off the old grass and reseeding is enough, or I need to replace some topsoil.

Yes, I agree with your mother, most probably fungal disease. Do a search on brown patch, as that is a fairly common one. Summer patch is another. What type of grass did you seed with?

Hi,
I don't know what seed was used. My friends brother who is in the landscaping business put the lawn in.
The grass where it is dead just pushes aside. I took some close up pictures. One has a beetle in the picture. Is that the notorious grub?
Looking at the lawn again I would say it is spreading out from the main dead spot.
Reading about fungus diseases it seems that I should put down corn meal.
The product Actinovate seems to help most people that use it, I guess it could help here?

That's not a beetle or grub, it's a pill bug or roly-poly. Fungal diseases generally spread out if not treated especially on long wet grass. The damage usually occurs fairly quickly. Grub damage is generally more diffuse and spreads slowly. Both of those treatments are more preventative than cures. The Actinovate might protect your healthy grass however, but whatever is brown now is most likely dead.

So, can I rake up the dead lawn, put down corn meal and reseed the affected areas?

Like tiemco implied, the grass likely doesn't have much disease at this point. The disease has probably already run it's course and killed the grass that it will kill. Treatments must be done before the disease is apparent.

You can reseed. Don't bother raking. Corn meal can be applied at your wish, but I don't think it's necessary unless you want an organic fertilizer.

I couldn't see the pictures for some reason, so the answer was based on the questions/replies.
