Planting grass seed / rust fungus

I'm preparing to plant new grass seed in a handful of spots in my yard that are somewhat bare. Recently, there has been an orange-ish dusting on the grass that was diagnosed as rust fungus. I was told that the fungus won't hurt the exisiting yard, but will it have a negative effect on the germination and growing of new grass? Thanks.

The fungus can damage the existing lawn (and thus the seedlings as well). Purdue Ag suggests that there are a couple fungicides that are very effective, but that maintaining the health of the turf is the best preventative. Link attached.

If it was me, I'd spray one of those fungicides on the existing rust. And if any of the bare areas show signs of the rust, I'd spray them as well, then wait a day or three before overseeding. Just my $0.02.
