How much weed seed is acceptable?

Posted by davidpj 7 (My Page) on

I just received my bags of tall fescue grass seed mix. I was a bit suprised to read that 50lb bags have .02% weeds. Is this considered a high or low amount? Inert matter is 1.08% and crop is .40%. Thanks.

Ouch. If you are going for a high quality "golf course" lawn I wouldn't use it. Seems like a lot to me. My understanding is that "other crop" could be other grass types like orchard grass or quack grass that you can't get rid of with a selective herbicide. The "other crop" may not be anything that bad, but if my memory serves me, that's what I recall. My seed is 85% germination rate and 1.00% inert matter, I believe.

Checking around the 'net it seems like less than 1% weeds, less than 1% crop, and less than 4% inert is the goal for good quality grass. If this is true, then my grass is well below those parameters.

The germination rate for all my cultivars is 85%.

I do not accept any seeds in my weed. Can't roll good joints, and they pop and explode when they burn :>)
