What is this weed that is overtaking my lawn?

This weed, whatever it is, is becoming a real problem. A few months ago there were some small patches of it in my front yard lawn. Now it dominates just less than half of it (~400-600 ft^2). It is characterized by thousands of individual weeds with shallow roots. I don't really need to know what it is. How to selectively kill it would suffice.
