| I need to overseed my new lawn that basically didn't come in this summer. I want to rent a slit seeder. Problem I'm having is that I have a large yard & don't really have enough sprinklers to keep it all watered at the same time. I was planning to do the front first, and once it was fairly established, move to the back. At this point, I don't think I have enough time before the weather gets cold, plus I'd have to rent the slit seeder twice (which I'd like to avoid).
It's been dry here (Green Bay WI, zip code 54313). I'm wondering if I can put down seed on the entire lawn, but not start to water the back right away - since it's been dry, will there be any harm in using the slit seeder on the whole thing & not watering the back for a couple weeks? Thanks in advance for the replies!! |

| You are starting pretty late for Green Bay WI, some would say too late, especially if it's KBG. Puting seeds down with the intent of watering them in a few weeks has two main problems. First, it will be way too late. Second, any rain you do get will start the germination process, and if they dry out after that they will probably die. What you can do is seed the areas you can water now. Then when it's cold before the first snowfall seed the rest of the yard. It's called dormant seeding. The snowmelt cycle will work the seeds into the soil. Then what will happen with the spring rains and warming soil temps is the grass will germinate by itself. You have to be watchful though, because if the seeds germinate and then the rains go away, the seedlings die pretty quickly. |

| thanks for the reply. I got seed with NO KBG, for that reason. I know that I'm going to have to re-overseed next year & plan to use KBG at that time. This is definitely not an ideal situation, but our yard is (in addition to being big) pretty hilly. This was new construction & I need to get something coming in to keep the runoff at bay.. I may need to bite the bullet & buy some extra hose/sprinklers.. |
