I would strongly caution you about adding a lot of unneeded topsoil. If your drainage is perfect now, adding more soil is just about guaranteed to ruin it. If you suddenly have water draining into your basement, or worse, the neighbor's basement, you will regret the free soil.

Sounds like you are looking for an alternative to traditional turf. Would you be interested in Dutch white clover? Or a blend of clover with grass? You might ask your local ag agent about local native grasses. Some of those can do exactly what you want and they look excellent when properly seeded and tended.

Creeping red fescue gets a whole different look when left to grow long. Take a look at the pictures on this page. Once it flops over it becomes very ornamental and less functional.

Sorry for the late response. I just now saw your reply. As for your concerns about ruining the drainage, this will enhance it if anything. Everything is still sloped away from the house and dirt is added around the basement so everything still drains away from the house. I will be adding eve gutters to take that water away also. In the meantime, I have graded everything and even had to buy some fill. I have purchased the red fescue seed, but I didn't get it soon enough to seed this year. The extension agent advised not seeding after Oct. 1st. With that in mind, will the seed keep and be as good next spring? I plan on mowing it for the most part. I just did not want it to get too long if I did not get to mow if for a couple of weeks. Thanks for your reply.
