What is causing this damage?

Hello,

I just noticed this lawn damage this morning. There are small holes all over the lawn. Basically everywhere. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance

It is very possible the holes left by grubs turning into moths, digging out (thus leaving a hole), and flying away.

Huh. I will have to try to id some of the moths we have around. We have a ton of butterflies - one type in particular. Maybe they do the same thing? I will investigate. Thanks for the lead.

I assume if that is true, the lawn will recover next spring?

I highly doubt those are moths digging out of the soil. Squirrels are notorious hole diggers, and they start at first light. Skunks can also cause a lot of damage, but they usually tear up the turf more than small holes like you have pictured.

We do have squirrels, but in the ten years we've lived here I've never seen this. I'm really perplexed.

Them holes are caused by moles. Use your search engine to see how to get rid of them Mitter

How deep are the holes?

If I had to guess either Mole Crickets or voles based on the size.
