High weed pressure in newly seeded area

I'm noticing many little weeds (probably purslane and spurge) germinating in some areas. The seeds were obviously in the soil already. Anything that can be done to control them this fall as the grass germinates and grows, or do we just have to let everything run its course?

Also, I noticed one area where I used some topdressing (very light sprinkling of Scotts bagged topsoil with manure) didn't germinate properly. I have gone back and added more seed. I'm not sure what happened. It is an area that is also prone to drying in hot weather, but I was watering frequently. I was surprised. Could it have been the topdressing that caused it? It was not at all thick. That's the only area I topdressed, and the only area with this issue.
