My lawn progress

Ok, so after much research I'm finally ready to act. We have only lived in this house for about a month and it was empty for about 4 years. The yard is all weed, looks like there may be a few blades of St Augustine in there somewhere. By a few, I mean only like a few square inches of it.

In these pictures, I have just finished raking all the pine straw and other nasty buildup out. I plan to cut it short and spread some organic matter (don't really want to put down chemicals due to kids and neighborhood animals) then spread some bermuda seed, a Sahara product to be exact.

Here is a decent overview picture:

Now, my big issue is this:

How do I kill all of this brush so I can cut it out and put some nice mulch around those trees? I know I could get some big brush machine in there, but I'm on a limited budget and its only a rental house (you know what I mean). The home owner cut out a good bit of it, but its just popping back up, I need it gone.

Thanks for any help and ideas/advice, I'll post pictures as it makes progress.

Richie

Where do you live, because in most locations it's too late to seed Bermuda, especially when you have to kill all the weeds and brush which takes at least a week.

I live in the FL panhandle. But I don't plan to kill all the weeds, just over seed and water/feed it. I just want to kill off the brush around the trees. Thanks!

My opinion is the same.

I still think it's too late to seed Bermuda, but I am not a warm season grass expert. Hopefully Texasweed will chime in to set the record straight.

Maybe I should just spread some annual rye to get a more grassy than weedy lawn now and over the winter and spread some bermuda in the spring. Or zoysia has been running through my head too.

Well, I just spread 25lbs of rabbit food on my front lawn. I guess we'll wait a few weeks to see what happens. I assume that it is too late to seed with bermuda, so I'm gonna get some gulf rye sown and see how it goes.

Got my reel mower in today, Great States 415-16. Pretty easy to put together, only 2 steps. I tried it out on a little patch in front of my house, worked pretty well. As per usual it didn't get any of the longer stuff, but that was to be expected. Looking forward to trying it out on the whole yard.
