Fall overseeding in Wisconsin

I would like to overseed my lawn here in Madsion, WI as soon as possible, but I'm wondering how much time I have left to get the seed down before the timing becomes too late.

I plan to mow the grass very short and collect the clippings, then aerate, as I have soil compaction issues too, then broadcast the grass seed, then broadcast starter fertilizer, and water regularly, as best as I can.

I'll be doing mine this weekend once the rain finally stops here in NH.
There are links out there that show you the approximate first frost in your area. I'm no expert but I'd suggest that you have at least 3 weeks before the first possible frost in order to have enough time for your seed to germinate.

I'll be working tomorrow and Saturday on overseeding here in KS.

When is your average first frost date? That's the determining factor. Around here, the difference in time between the break in heat of summer and first frost is so short that it's better to wait for freezing weather and dormant seed. If your expected first frost date is before 10/22, you should look into dormant seeding.

Thanks. I think I may need to look into the dormant see, then. Our first frost is in the first week and half of October.

You're pushing it for a fall seeding. I think a dormant seeding would work best.

In Wisconsin, you're probably looking at conditions like mine. Once the snow falls, you'll have coverage until spring.

If that's the case, spread the seeds just before your first good snow storm.

You are pushing the envelope for seeding. More importantly, you should mulch rather than bag. Leaving cuttings returns nutrients to the lawn aaving you money.

The only reason for bagging at this point was to allow a clean base for the seed to make good contact with the soil. I don't want it laying in top of the clippings. Otherwise, I always mulch the grass. I will follow your advice, bpgreen. Thanks for all the replies.
