Just mowed lawn renovation....question!

I noticed that there are certain areas that are quite thin on my front bank while I was mowing. I renovated and planted new tall fescue on my front bank on September 14th. I just mowed it for the first time and I was wondering:

Now that I am mowing the grass will it begin to thicken up and spread?

I just applied more starter fertilizer - what should I expect to see in the next coming weeks?

Thanks all!

RE: Just mowed lawn renovation....question!

Mowing promotes tillering of tall fescue, you should mow once per week even if you are only removing a small amount of blade. Mow in a different direction at each mowing (east west one time, north south the next). Over the next month your grass will thicken, but it won't really spread, meaning bare areas will remain bare, but thin areas will become fuller. Continue to irrigate in periods of no rain. 2-3 times per week should be sufficient unless the area in question gets very dry, or stays very wet.

Fescue is not the type of grass that will spread out and cover bare spots. If you have bare spots to fill, then you need more seed.

Kentucky bluegrass is often mixed with fescue because it will fill in bare spots. Unfortunately it will also go dormant (brown) in the winter.
