Probably started a fool's errand this weekend

| Saturday I planted a couple of areas where my fall seeding "missed". One spot the sprinker system missed and another I just didn't get hit with the slit seeder.
Problem is timing. We already had temps down to 27 last week. Our annual first freeze is Oct 31 and so I'm betting this project on a mild fall and late arrival of hard freezes. The good news is we are supposed to yo-yo back to a record hi temp today.
But, I couldn't get my schedule to allow a follow up seeding any sooner, so, we'll just take a shot and hope for the best. I've never seeded anywhere close to this late before. Shade fescue mix in zone 6b for what its worth.
What is it the dice players say? "c'mon baby, daddy needs new shoes." |

| In raleigh, the city/state routinely seeds in october. I thought it was a little nutty the first few times I saw it, but somehow it works. The up and down temperatures seem to be enough to get decent germination. On the down side, the seedlings don't grow much. They get maybe 2 inches tall and then just stall. Apparently, they are growing roots though because they make it to spring. Personally, I seeding 9/22. I put a bit more seed in the thin areas myself this weekend. It is supposed to be back into the 70's this week, so I think my chances are pretty good. |

| I guess trying to get lucky on yard projects helps keep them interesting. I'm pretty sure I can get a decent germination on this seeding... but what mother nature might do here in 4 to 8 weeks is a total crapshoot. A few years ago we had two feet of snow and six degree lows on Halloween. The odds are that it'll be a little better than that, but... guess we'll have to wait and see. ;) |

| A little follow up. The two inch soil temp was 60 degrees when I planted this last overseed. We've had a couple of early freezes and some snow since. It is now 40 degrees at the two inch level. The first overseed on Labor day had the fescue mix come up in 7 days. This one took 15 days to see any germination. But, at least there is some. A fairly rocky start. The long range forecast now has two weeks of fairly mild temps predicted (seasonally). We'll see what Mother Nature has in store from here. |
