Greener grass on the other side...

Hi all im new to this forum and want to say thank you for all your great support.

I have 5000 sq ft of St. Augustine grass around my house. I have been getting weeds latley because someone mowed the grass too short before i moved in. I generally cut my grass at 3.5" every week and really like the looks of it.

Well back to the topic. So where my laundry machine drains all its water(greywater)the grass is so full healthy and very dark green. I love it and wish that my whole yard looked like this. It is so full that weeds cant even make it through the thickness of the grass. Now what i want to know if there is a way i can use the same detergent diluted of course to water my entire lawn? I dont have room to set up a tank to pick up all this water and reuse it.

How do i get my whole lawn this green? I will post pictures later if anyone wants. I am an avid golfer and enjoy seeing well manicured grass. Thank you for you help.

Tony

Are you sure it's the detergent that is causing the green and not just the water?

If it's the detergent, it could mean that you've got a deficiency in some nutrient. Rather than use the detergent, which will give you that nutrient and many others that you don't need, you should get a soil test and find out what needs to be applied and apply that.

You also might want to consider directing the gray water to different areas of the lawn so that you don't have buildups of anything that could lead to problems down the road.

If it is the detergent you could just get an ortho dial sprayer and add detergent to it and spray the lawn down once a week. You could set the amount to replicate the conditions created in the washer. Most detergents contain phosphates, so maybe your lawn needs more phosphorus. How often do you fertilize? Also I believe most detergents make water more basic, so it could be that your soil is too acidic and the detergents have raised the pH of the soil in that area. Lastly the surfactants in the detergent will help the water find it's way into the soil better, although in FL I doubt this is a problem, but you never know. I would definitely do soil tests, but you should do one in the affected area, and a seperate one from the rest of the lawn to compare the two. Don't forget to let us know the results!

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into getting a soil test asap. I recently moved in and did my first weed and feed treatment with bonus s.
After reading lots of forum i am interested in doing and organic maintenance plan. If any one knows what good products are and some type of schedule for south florida let me know. I am new to this grass maintenance but really enjoy it. I will let you know what my soil test results are like.

Thanks again,
T
