How low do you hope to go?

Part of this depends on how many twigs and other chaff you have in the yard. Reel mowers don't like twigs.

My yard doesn't have any twigs or anything in it.

I want to maintain it under 1 inch. Probably .5 to .75 inches.

Before the grass begins to grow again, you should take it down a little at a time to be sure you're not going to hit anything on the way down. The only worry would be high spots that might scalp and dull your mower. Are you pretty level now?

For the most part my yard is level. I may have to level a few spots with sand but nothing glaring.

I'm in the process of taking it low with my rotary now. I want to get to my mowers lowest setting and leave the grass height there for winter insulation. Then I'll take it down as low as possible in the spring with the reel mower.
