| We've acquired a foreclosed property with a patch of lawn that has been neglected since spring - or longer. Grass is between ankle and mid calf in height, fairly healthy looking, several seed, whatever they are called shooting up, very few weeds.
Should it be mowed short, medium, not at all? Cuttings collected or left in place? Fertilizer? |

| I've read several times that no more than 1/3 of the hight should be removed per mowing in order to avoid the grass having to deviote too much energy to the blade tips. It doesn't sound like cutting 1/3 is practical in your case though. I'd go with mowing it with a good sharp blade today. This way, it will have the remainder of the fall and spring to recover before summer heat gets to it. |

| Yes, typically you don't want to mow more than 1/3 of the blade, but it's not a huge problem if you do it infrequently, especially in times of less stress (spring and fall). I would probably mow it down to about 4 inches, collecting the clippings in a bag. Then I would give it an application of fertilizer and a good, long drink. A few days later I would cut it again to the desired height, depending on what you like and what kind of grass you have. 2.5 to 3 inches is fine for most cool season grasses. Do you know what kind of grass it is? It might look a bit stemmy for a bit, but this will fade as the grass adjusts to it's new height. |

| I agree with tiemco except for the bagging--forget bagging. Grass that high is going to be a real pain to bag and will stall the moower. Just cut and rake up the clippings. |

| Where do you live? What kind of grass do you have? |
