New home, new lawn

We moved to this house about a month ago and the lawn, namely the back, needs some serious help. About 1/4 to 1/2 of the back lawn is St. Augustine and the other half is either balding completely or overcome by various local weeds.

I'm looking for some ideas. I am not positive I want to stick with the Augustine seeing I as I have a couple large dogs that don't allow a recovering lawn such as St Aug. to grow runners where needed.

All ideas considered and the season is going towards cool. I have no preference in organic or synthetic.

Where are you in Texas?

Are you willing to water deeply once per week in the summer, once per month in the winter, and once every 2 or 3 weeks in between?

Lack of timely water is the biggest reason for failure of St Augustine. Probably fungal disease is the second biggest reason.

How much shade do you get in the back?

How old and/or playful are the dogs? Are they hole diggers?

Will the dogs leave a soaker hose alone?
