Thin areas after overseeding...

Tall fescue overseed 6 weeks ago. 95% of the areas came in thick. A few small areas didn't come in well because of too much water from mother nature.

Looking for best method to fix those problem areas. There is enough bare soil that the weeds next year will have a great time if I don't do something.

I am thinking dormant seed before a good snowfall. Then when the pre-emergent time comes around next year, and I always need it (two doses), use something that does not mess with fescue seed germination. Does this sound about right?

I'm assuming a starter fert won't be necessary at the beginning of the season when it starts to germinate and I can just go about my normal fertilizer at the end up the first flush of growth sometimes in May/Memorial Day???

The typical rule for Pre-M is 3 cuts where you remove an inch of grass from the new grass. In other words after 3 times of cutting NEW grass from 4" to 3" you should be able to apply almost any Pre-M - double check the label still. If you mark the new areas, it shouldn't be too hard (if they come up nicely) to pull that off before putting the pre-emergent down, even if you have to bump your application a week or two. If they don't grow enough you will probably have to change pre-emergent to something like Tupersan.
