Spring Seeding

This year I aerated/overseeded my yard which has new fescue from slit seeding the entire yard last fall. I also had a sprinkler system put in at the end of summer as we are in Delaware and the July/August months leave everything dormant and kills off some grass leaving spotty areas in the lawn. The aerating/overseeding did great but there are still a few areas that need attention. I was always under the impression of never planting any seeds in the Spring, but with my sprinkler system in place I am reconsidering. Anyone have thoughts or experience from seeding in the Spring? If so, When to start? etc. The largest area would literally be no larger then a 12 x 12 in. area.

RE: Spring Seeding

A sprinkler system would be a huge in seeding in the spring however, the biggest problem is the pesticides used. Most Pre-M can't be applied until you've mowed three times. That is the case with most selective herbicides. The trick is to find ones that the seedlings have better tolerance to, and it would probably be advantageous to spray Tenacity when you seed as well.

As for timing, you want to be after the last frost. I forget the exact temperatures, but you want the soil to be at least around 55 degrees, I believe, for best germination rate. Maybe highs around 70 and lows not too cold (maybe 40's). Otherwise, the sooner the better. Seeding in the spring is a challenge to pull off but it can be done.
