lots of clover

My back yard is full of clover. Now someone said here before if you have clover you are deficient in some nutrients in the soil.

I had a soil test in april and all they said to add was a fert. with a higher nitrogen number.

I mulch mowed my lawn all summer and mowed high so why might I have this problem?

"My back yard is full of clover. Now someone said here before if you have clover you are deficient in some nutrients in the soil. "

There are those who consider the existence of particular weeds to be indications of deficiencies in the soil. These weeds are called indicator weeds.

Somebody posted a list of weeds and what they meant and the weeds in that list indicated that my soil was too sandy and heavy clay, was high pH and acidic, was low in nitrogen with too much nitrogen and was too wet and suffering from a lack of water.

I'm of the opinion that weeds in the lawn indicate weeds in the lawn.

Clover will add nitrogen to the soil, so it will do well in soil where grass would not do as well, but fertilizing properly won't kill it. Proper fertilization will help the grass be more healthy, but the clover will also be healthy and just won't fix nitrogen because it doesn't need to do so.

Two fully broad-casted applications of Weed-B-Gone, using a hose-end applicator, completely eradicated my clover.

Now, lets wait for incoming jabs from the Need-2B-Green fanatics. ;^)

Nothing wrong with recommending WBG on the lawn forum. It's just on the organic lawn care forum that it's a no-no.

If I spray WBG, I spot spray it, but that's mostly because I'm cheap. Also, I planted some clover on purpose (strawberry clover because it does better in my alkaline soil) so I can't spread over the entire lawn without killing the clover I want.

I've always found clover mixed in the lawn grass to be pleasing.

I spot spray the other weeds, but let the clover grow. The honey bees seem to be pleased as their numbers are increasing.

I have tried WBG and the clover laughed..Used Confront, gone in 3 days.

Clover does not mean you are deficient in some nutrients in the soil, although it does not mean you are not deficient either. Best to get a soil test done and find out exactly where your soil is on the nutrient chart.

Next, I had tons of clover, even with healthy soil. I used Weed B gone in a 1 gallon sprayer, one application killed most of it in a week. Sure, there was some stubborn patches that did not go away...hit them again. I think the 1 gallon sprayer is a better method than the hose end sprayer, but it is slower an more labor intensive. A good way to do it is when you mow, mow back and forth to create rows across the lawn. Then a couple days later spray each row one at a time. You'll be sure to spray your lawn 100% evenly unlike the hose end sprayer.
