| I had Bermuda sod installed 6 1/2 weeks ago. Each sod section has grown at different heights. Some strips have grown to 6-8" and some less than 2". The lawn looks lumpy! It's nice and green of course. I mowed last week down to 3 3/4" and this week to 2 3/4" and it looks less lumpy (uneven). But, if I mow much lower, I will expose the brown bottom sections and it would look terrible, though less uneven. My question:
1. Should I leave it alone until the spring?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| How was the soil prepared before laying the sod? If you rototilled it, then anything could happen with growth height. Generally faster/higher growth indicates more, or more continuous, moisture. If you did not till, then you likely have slight variations in the surface profile that cause irrigation water to run off where the grass is tallest. Or you could have an underground water leak. Are you saying you let your grass get up to 8 inches high or is that your estimate of how much it has grown as you continue to mow it? Bermuda should be mowed to 1 inch or thereabouts most of the time. For the winter it is okay to let it go to 1.5 inches. Some bermuda's grow very well when mowed to 3/32 inch high on a daily basis. So yes, you can mow the brown stems down as low as you want and the grass will return to green. What happens with bermuda is when it is mowed very low it takes on a horizontal growth habit rather than the vertical stems. That's when you are in the groove with it. Unfortunately to keep it that way you have to mow every few days. Since it is already so high, you might leave it there until spring. Where are you in Texas? If you are south of me in George West, then you might have a few more weeks of growth in which case you could mow it lower still. If so keep weekly water on it and you should see it repair itself from lower mowing. |

| I'm in the DFW area. Yes, it got up to about 6" in spots, and the ground was tilled prior to laying the sod. |

| Did you mow last week for the first time? If so you waited to long. Looks like your weather is cooling so it might be best to wait until spring before you mow lower. |

| I mowed the first time about 2 weeks ago at 4 1/2 weeks after the sod was laid down. Will it hurt the grass to mow lower once it goes dormant this fall or winter (2")? I was thinking I'd like to try to get it to about 2", but I can wait until spring if that's the best time. |
