Time to overseed?

We just had a snowfall in the Catskills last week, which scared me as I had planned to do some overseeding. Fortunately all the snow melted, and I've mowed down the lawn. The question is: is it time to overseed or should I wait?

I'm only at the house today and tomorrow, probably won't be back for another couple of weeks, so I'm tempted to do so immediately, but am concerned that the time isn't right yet.

I'm talking about dormant overseeding, by the way.

I would wait, it's still a bit early. That snow was somewhat of a freak event. If we get a November warm up those seeds could potentially germinate and heavy rains could move the seeds around.

Yeah, good point. I think rain is forecast for next week.

Last year I covered some bare batches with seeds at just the right time, and it worked beautifully. Only problem is I forget exactly when I put out the seeds. Age does that to the brain.

You can do it whenever, as long as soil temps are low enough to not allow germination (generally below 50). First good snow is typically recommended as it will prevent seed loss from wind, rain, and the snowmelt will work them into the soil.
