I recently learned that Virginia will be banning phosphorus in lawn and garden fertilizers available to homeowners, with the exception of starter fertilizer. Since my area of the state often gets long dry spells in the summer, strong root growth is essential. Is there any way to get phosphorus to my yard? Maybe mixing starter fertilizer with lawn fertilizer? Or buying agriculture grade fertilizer? Please no comments on the environmental impacts of phosphorus on the Bay, I live in the country and have a lot of land between me and the nearest creek or stream.

Phosphorus is held very tightly in soil unlike nitrogen which leaches quite readily. If your levels of phosphorus are in range, then you don't need to apply any. A soil test will tell you your P levels. If you are establishing a new lawn or overseeding, or your test shows a deficiency, then starter is warranted.

I'm curious, have you heard if licensed professionals are still allowed to use it?

Well seeing that you are in VA where soils are acidic there is a real easy cheap way to work around the silly laws. Buy a bag of Rock Phosphate. But i agree phosphorus is very stable in soil, so a soil test is prudent because too much phosphorous is as bad as too little.

Thanks for the response guys. Bassplayer - I do not know whether professional lawn services are still allowed to apply it. All I know is that the phosphorus ban exempts farmers.

That is interesting. Maybe L&L will have something on it.
