| Hi all -
I spent a lot of time over the summer replacing sprinklers, seeding lawn with topper, etc. Turned very green! As soon as it got colder a few weeks ago half of the lawn turned brown. It started off as a tall fescue mix. I added Kentucky Bluegrass seed (I think). What I'm left with I'm not sure of. I have attached a couple of photos so you can see the fescue vs the other grass. Any ideas on what I should do?
Thanks! |

| A few things. First off, your mowing height looks too low. What height do you cut at? The areas of brown could be crabgrass dying in the cooler weather, especially if you did a spring overseed. Or it could be any other warm season grass that might happen to be mixed in with your fescue/bluegrass. Bermuda, zoysia, saint augustine, and centipede will all go dormant with cooler weather, and turn brown. |

| I have the mower set at the highest setting. If that is crabgrass I'm not in a good position as most of the lawn is that way! Should i pull out what I can and reseed at this point? |

| Highest setting?! What are you using, a golf course greens mower? I am sort of kidding, but in all honesty the green grass in that picture looks less than 1 inch high. Is this just an illusion? What is the actual height that you mow? As far as reseeding, it's the only way to fill in those areas. I know San Diego has great weather, and a long growing season, so you could probably seed now, but again I am not that sure. Crabgrass will return when temperatures are favorable for it, but using a preemergent before germination next spring, and a postemergent on any young crabgrass will remedy that situation. If it is dormant warm season grass like Bermuda, then that's another story. |
