Now or spring?

Hi, I just bought a house with a half acre that is mostly lawn. It is full of moss and fungi. Should I use some sort of Moss out product, thatch, and seed now. Or should I wait for the spring? If I wait, is there anything I should do now, like fertilize? I'm eager to get this lawn into shape but don't want to do more harm by doing it out of season. Thanks for any advise!

Washington DC or state of? If it's the state, which part? Most people think of Seattle when they think of Washington, but there are areas that are desert, mountain, etc. We need to know a bit more about where you are to have any chance of giving a meaningful answer.

I'm in Washington State. 25 minutes east of Seattle, diffinately no desert here.

I don't know that much about getting rid of the moss or fungus, but in the Seattle area, you can probably seed just about any time since the winters are so mild.

You'll probably be best off with perennial rye grass, which germinates pretty quickly. The downside of PR is that it doesn't spread, so if any patches die, they need to be overseeded. On the bright side, it germinates so fast that the spots won't be bare for long once you put the seed down.

On moss - it grows everywhere in seattle, but it only takes over where other plants struggle. The key to getting rid of it is improving the soil and adding nutrients regularly. A typical rehab plan would be to rake out as much moss as possible, aerate the entire lawn, seed and fertilize. Then commit to a regular fertilization and aeration schedule. I'd personally recommend starting on some organic fertilizers to help build up the soil and definitely mulch mow clippings and leaves back into the lawn.

Good advice, bill!

I'd get a good soil test. It may explain why so much moss and fungus.

I use Midwest Laboratories.

Select S3C test, not L&G. It gives micronutrients too where L&G doesn't. It's $26.00

If you use someone else, just make sure it gives micronutrients too, not just main ones. Low Sulfur and Iron can cause moss and fungus so you really need a good test.
