Came across this Googling something entirely different...But WOW! Said to be from the Dec. 1935 issue of Modern Mechanix:

Old School

Enjoy!

I have to admit I somehow missed the official "forum picture" prior to posting this bit of nostalgia. I've been mowing commercially for over 20 years and to this day dog poop is one of my biggest beefs (using a walk-behind). But powering a walk-behind with a horse? I guess dog doo isn't so bad afterall. LOL! Makes that 'chariot' look even better! Can't help but wonder about the turning radius, think it's safe to assume speed wasn't really it's strongpoint.

RE: We've come a long way!

We bought our home in 1950, and the front lawn was not in best of shape, although it was ten years old when we bought. Grass grew well, but it had those long-stemmed stems sticking up in great proliferation, called Plaintan in this area. I had a reel mower, but all it did was bend the stems down and not cut them off.
I hired a youth from the neighborhood who said he had just the tool to mow those stems.
He had a powered reel mower, with a larger reel, mounted above the regular reel, and driven with a belt. the upper reel would bend the stems back to where the bottom reel could cut them off! I told him to get a patent on it, but he never did. And then--rotary mowers came into vogue.
