Honda HRC-216/w hydrostatic trans

Last year I purchased this unit from the local Honda shop. The mower was a trade-in from a local yard service. It was pretty much trashed - looked really bad but ran good. I painted the red - Honda red. I took a sample of the hydrostatic fluid out of the trans with a battery filler - can't really look at the fluid with the dip stick. It was really dark black. That concerned me. There really isn't any maintenance schedule on this. But replacing the trans is a major expense. So this year when I had all the fuel and oil drained, I turned the mower upside down and drained all the old trans fluid out - and replaced it with good stuff purchased at the Honda shop for about $12.50 qt. It might be worth considering - or at least checking.

Good tip. The key is keeping the dirt out as it is being done. Beats crying about a smoked trans later if you know the oil is toasted now. Hopefully it works out. Keep us posted.
