Need Toro 2-cycle Mower Coil (17-1529)

I have an '86 Toro Model 20680 that uses the Suzuki 2-cycle engine. It's a great mower, but it appears I need to replace the ignition coil for a second time. The first coil replacement was in 1996. It uses part number 17-1529. Are there any used parts suppliers, or is new the only option?

Thanks,

I used to run Toro Proline Commercials with the Suzuki engine such as 22040 and 22043. However, am not familiar with p/n 17-1529. According to my spreadsheet 20680 is consumer self propelled with Suzuki and used 81-2820 coil in 1986 (s/n 6000001 - 6999999).

That said, coils are about $150 to $175 new. They are on Ebay from time to time for $50 to $75. I sold most of my Suzuki parts and generally got $75 for a coil.

Just be careful. The 4 stroke coil for Suzuki looks similar but won't work on the 2 strokes. Right now there are 3 or 4 for around $20, but does you no good.

Thanks ggoyeneche.

My 20680 is serial number 4005193. Part number 17-1529 is what I used when I replaced it for the first time in 1996.

I read in one of your earlier posts (below) that 81-1990 and 17-1529 are interchangeable whereas 81-2820 won't work without further modifications. Based on your earlier post, I should be able to used either 17-1529 or 81-1990, but not 81-2820. Do you concur?

Thanks for your help!

Toro used 81-1990 thru about 1985-86. It also crosses to 17-1529. From 1985-86 thru end of 2 cycle production the coil was 81-2820. Price new is about $150 to $175. Ebay seems to get anywhere from $25 to $100.

To best of my knowledge the two coils ARE NOT interchangeable. 81-1990 is a two-leg and uses flywheel with single magnet. 81-2820 is three-leg and uses two magnet flywheel. BTW Briggs went the other way in the early 1960's from three-leg to two-leg. You might be able to interchange, provided you change BOTH flywheel and coil. This could be done successfully on Briggs, but I never did with Suzuki.

I know what I wrote, but I must have got that cross-ref off the web, because I can't make a match to 17-1529 anymore. None of my Toro documentation references 17-1529.

If it works for you, go for it.

Key is # of legs on coil, and number of magnets on flywheel. Two-leg coil matches to single magnet; Three-leg coil (later production) matches to two magnets.

I figured out where I got lost on the 81-1990 and 17-1529 coils. Toro's literature consistently points to 81-1990 both on-line and in printed parts list. However, if you try to order the 81-1990, Toro's On-line parts sales site say 81-1990 is NLA and replaced by 17-1529 at $235.84.

Anyway, you can substitute 17-1529 for the old 81-1990 coil. Both are two-leg. And NO, you can't use the later 81-8210 three-leg coil.

The good news is that the two-leg coil is generally more robust and seldom fails (compared to the three-leg) and when they come up on Ebay sell for quite a bit less.

Sorry for the confusion.
