Hi - I am looking for a self propelled gas mower w/electric start. I have arthritis in my hands, thus the need for the easy starter. I need side shoot and bagger; mulching would be great but not a do or die. The real thing is easy use. I've read a few posts on issues w/mowers that have some type of thumb trigger (to change speed? pace?) - I really would not be able to manage holding any kind of clamp or such down for longer than a few moments. I have an easy yard - flat, a little under 1/2 acre. I've looked at a Toro at HD w/electric start - approx $400 which is my price range. Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Ease of use is my priority.

The Toro Personal Pace will serve you well. No finger controls to bother with plus it knows to go the speed you walk.

I have never had a Toro so I can't speak to their effectiveness for your application. I can however recommend checking out your local Craigslist to see if anyone is selling a well cared for Honda model that has the options you require. I know some of the older ones have key start, their hydrostatic propulsion system is pretty much infinitely adjustable anywhere from 0-3.5/4mph and if memory serves, the bar you depress for movement has little to no resistance (isn't spring loaded once fully depressed) once actuated. I just know the 10+y old Honda I have (not even maintained that well by previous owner) starts on the first pull, every time. Also my father in law owns an almost 20y old Honda Harmony (he's the one that turned me onto Honda lawn equipment) and has never once had any issues with it and has used it every single season since new and his lawn care regimen would fall into the middle of whatever scale you can think of to measure the rigors the mower has to go through when in use.
