How To Remove Self Propelled Drive Mechanism (Honda)

I have a Honda Harmony II HRR 216. It has seen a lot of use and the self-propelled drive mechanism seems to be worn out (lots of squeaking and other noises). It also tends to resist rolling backwards. This is a hand-me-down mower and I do not need self-propelled action, so I would like to remove the mechanism - to cut the noise, to reduce weight and to make it easier to push back and forth.

So, if anybody has done this or knows how it might be done - I would love some advice.

Can I just remove the hardware and be done with it?

Do the wheels need a rear axel or do the just bolt on to the frame of the mower? If I need to put in a new rear axel to replace the self-propelled drive, any ideas on whether I can just find a generic axel for a 21" mower?

Thanks for your help.
