I have this Honda engine that takes about 4-7 pulls before starting. I have the manual choke/throttle setup. I was wondering if this is normal for this engine - or is there something else going on. I'm trying to avoid taking the carb apart. I turn the fuel supply off when done and back on again when in use. It runs perfectly when it finally starts. Any ideas would be appreciated. It appears that the choke/throttle linkage is working normally. I have flushed carb cleaner through the air filter - left it sit overnight.

In normal mowing weather temps, they are usually a 1-2 pull starter. I find with mine in the 40 degree range, last fall's treated fuel that a few pulls can be in order. If there isn't popping as it runs up, the valves are probably working freely. VAlve sticking after storage for the winter is real common on these though. I spray through the venturi after started with carb spray or the Seafoam spray to loosen those deposits successfully. Does it seem to you like it may be flooded over somewhat after sitting? Possibly, some may still seep through the float valve w/ the fuel shut off. Really, once you get comfortable with the twisting out of the links and with the gasket positioning- the carbs are quite simple- and quite cheap too for a replacement.

Thicker oil definitely makes mine require more pulls. Once it gets up to >55 or so, it's one pull. IF you run the carb out of fuel after closing the shut off valve, I think that adds a couple pulls.
