Wanted Toro 20092. Now what do you recommend?

I was thinking of getting a Toro Super Recycler with a Briggs & Stratton engine based on the good reputation it seems to have here and elsewhere, but I can't find the 20092 online and the new models come with a different (and arguably inferior) engine.

For about $500, help me purchase a solid, dependable mower that will mulch a 1/2 acre, relatively flat and open lawn for many years to come.

The Toro 20382 has a Honda engine. Is that a good alternative?

A google search returned 2 dealers with the 20092. Have you tried local dealers? The Toro website indicates the current model has a Briggs emgine. I don't see how one could argue that engine is inferior.

Both of those dealers told me that they don't actually have any 20092 SRs in stock. Although the 20092 is still listed on Toro's website, it's last year's model and has been discontinued. This year's model is the 20381 and it has the lesser Toro Premium OHV engine. The 20382 is basically identical to the 20381 but it has a Honda engine. Assuming I can no longer find any 20092s to purchase, does the 20382 seem like the next best thing, or is there something else I should consider?

My recommendation is that you focus more on the controls, deck, wheels and other features that make for good mowing and less on the engine. Be most concerned with how the controls work and how the machine bags and mulches. Any of those engines will reliably spin the blades and wheels for a long time if maintained. Toro has a well earned reputation for making SR mowers that work well.

I like the controls, deck, wheels, and other features of the Super Recycler. The only real difference is the engine. That being the case, should I just disregard what I've read and assume that the new engines are as reliable as Briggs & Stratton and Honda? I appreciate your advice, but it's not exactly helpful at this point.

Which engine are you concerned about and specifically why.

I personally and professionally feel a walk behind mower engine is either a Briggs, Kawasaki or a Honda or it should stay in the store. On a S/R or not. I looked up parts for new Toro farmed engine and it is serviced like the MTD Chondas. Components only and not that cheap either.
