Does the weight of a self-propelled mower matter?

I've done a lot of research on the Toro Personal Pace Walk (20332) and the Craftsman Platinum High Wheel (37454). It seems they have about the same positive/negative reviews and about the same price, but the Craftsman is 14 pounds heavier than the Toro. Will that make a big difference in the handling of the lawnmower? They are both rear wheel drive. I'm trying to decide which one to buy.

You stopped me on 'RWD hi-wheel', but I see it's a larger wheel than usual, not the real 12" hi-wheel. Okay, at anywhere near the same price, I will take the Toro over the Craftsman. The 14 lb difference is icing on the cake.

I agree with saxman1 -- I'd go with the Toro.

Its not the weight that matters, its how well you work it to meet the needs that matters.

I have a LawnBoy that I believe is the same drive system as the Toro (I think they are the same company now and Toro uses Lawnboy's system). It's a great mower. The faster you walk, the faster it goes. Best self-propelled I've ever owned.

The Toro wins hands down. PP is a way better/intuitive system.

Thanks a bunch for the info, guys. I am now the proud owner of my first Toro 20332 self propelled lawn mower. I'll be out experimenting with it tomorrow, after work. I feel like I got a new toy! :)

Well guys, looks like you know what you're talking about. The Toro was awesome! I began mowing right away - didn't have to "learn" how to use it - it just worked! No problem backing up or turning; although, I did pop a few wheelies! I was afraid I might have trouble trimming around things and getting in certain places, but it worked like a charm. I will tell ya, I gave it a good workout. If the lawn mower police had come out, I surely would have been arrested for battery! I gave it a beating. It held up through all the tall clover, cut down the thick buttercups that were left, and cut throug some kind of "sticky" grass. It never even sputtered through the really tough stuff. I had to refill the gas tank once. Next time I cut, it should really be a breeze - not to say it wasn't today. I'm glad I bought the Toro!

I was about to pop in and say Toro Personal Pace as well.. Great choice! I've had one for about 6-7 years and just love it. I've kept the deck cleaned, oil changed, new air filter and spark plug - it starts on the first pull each Spring.
