starter turning but not engaging

I have a 16hp poulan pro,new battery,new soilonoid,ran fine last year,when I turn the key the starter turns but does not engage the engine,any help would be appreciated

You did connect the battery correctly, some batteries have the positive on the right, some on the left. IF by chance you connected the battery up backwards, not only will the starter not engage, you probably have blown a fuse OR burned out the charging system.

Some batteries have the posts reversed, polarity wise.
They have an "R" in the number.
Of course, if the original had the R and the new one doesn't, you have the same problem.

The + post connects to the starter solenoid.

Walt Conner has the straight info on your problem! Switch connections and it will fix it! Some lawn tractor fixers sell lots of batteries, due to the guy who gets it wrong! BT/DT! Rustyj
