Before I spring for a self-propelled Toro lawnmower I'd like to know how the oil is changed. (I had a Honda mower years ago that required me to drain the oil onto the deck - what a mess!) Basically, what steps do I take?

Really, any ~ 21" walk behind mower can be warmed up and tipped to the side so you can drain the oil out the fill tube. If the fuel tank is still reasonably full, best to shut the fuel off.

Hondas are a bit messier. I always have to hold the oil collection pan near the spout as I am tipping it, or the oil gets on the deck. All other pushmowers are tipped on their side, with the gas tank always being UP.

I've always removed the drain plug to drain the oil. That way you get most all of the oil out. Most drain plugs can be removed with a 3/8s extension and a ratchet. Some have pipe plugs which can be removed with open end wrenches. I had some short scrap 4x4s so i built a frame to set the mowers on. I do several oil changes during the summer for friends and relatives so it makes it easier for me. HTH

Okay, I'll tip it, then. I seem to recall some models used to drain through the deck, so I wondered. Thanks for the advice.

We're at the stage that some wpm engines aren't even made with drains.
