Craftsman Self Propelled Drive Gear Lubricant

I have a Craftsman self-propelled walk behind mower where the front wheel drive stopped working. It has a 7 HP Briggs engine. The problem, as I found out, was the plastic drive gear in the gear case stripped out. It was no problem finding this out, just started disassembling until I could crack the gear case on the drive shaft for the front wheels. The gear case has s belt going to a pulley on top. The pulley is attached to a pinion gear that drives the plastic gear, which is mounted, directly on the drive shaft.
The question I have is what kind of lubricant should be used when the new gear is replaced? I cannot find in any manual what the lubricant might be. When the gear case was disassembled there was a strong smell of gear oil. The smell was about all there was as there was virtually no oil in the case. Maybe that’s why the plastic gear stripped out. I bought some 75W90 gear oil?? I was guessing that covering the lower third of the plastic drive gear would distribute the oil as needed.
Any thoughts or does someone have some first hand knowledge?

Sounds about right. There's a little flat plastic plug in the top part of the gear case, where you can pour in some oil, or put it in there before you reassemble it. The lack of gear oil is probably what toasted the gear box! All moving things need lubrication of some sort. I have taken some apart and fixed them, and i save parts from other Craftsman boxes just for that use. Just make sure it doesn't leak out, caused by worn axle shafts!

If I remember right on my Craftsman SP mower of 25 years ago the instructions said that you checked the oil by inserting a wire into the gear box from the top fill hole and measured the level of the oil. It was supposed to be 1 1/4 inches deep on the wire. I used 90 weight gear oil back then. I sold that mower in running condition last spring.

Most Sears (AYP) front drive mowers use Peerless (Tecumseh) gearboxes which call for bentonite grease. Gear oil is better than nothing but won't provide the protection of the thicker grease.

I would use Sten's #00 mower transmission grease.

If grease is the way to go how much is adequate? I’m sure I can source the grease locally.

I'm reading these posts and am wondering where it is possible to purchase the plastic gear itself. I haven't been able to find the gear alone but only the complete gearcase. If anyone can lead me to the gear it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jerry

If i can find the coffee can with the tranny parts in it, i can ship them to you. For a reimbursement of the postage. I might have the other parts, too. Have to go check in my garage.

I'm currently in the middle of this repair. In my case, I found a hole in the lower half of the case (rock?), the case full of grass clippings, and the gear stripped. Ordered the gear and the lower case from searspartsdirect.com (very reasonable). The specified sealant (Dow Corning 709) doesn't seem to exist. Sears service advised that they'd have to "look into" the matter of the sealant and what lubricant to use. When the parts arrive, I intend to use 85W-140 gear oil and seal the case with Permatex Blue RTV - unless I hear otherwise from Sears Service...
