Primer Bulb on Old Craftsman

A co-worker gave me an old Craftsman lawnmower that has a hole in the primer bulb. I called Sears parts and they said that the only way to replace the primer bulb was by purchasing a new carburetor, which is $69.99. I'd like to avoid spending that much money on an old mower!

Any other options? I've tried patching it with rubber cement, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Go to any dealer with your model number and order the primer bulb. Should cost about $5. There are different styles and some are hard to get out. Use the open end of a 3/4" deep socket to install the new bulb. There is an art to tapping the socket with a hammer to seat the retainer.

By the way, some bulbs HAVE a center hole in them.

If you are looking for an easy fix- someone posted a short while back about putting a dab of silicone over the hole. I don't know why that wouldn't work -plus you don't need to worry about the new bulb sealing....
