Rear propelled - - left wheel only

My Craftsman 917.377662 rear propelled walk behind mower that lost drive to the right wheel. The wheel gear teeth and matching drive gear mesh fine. Anyone KNOW what is wrong? Hope it's not an output shaft issue. Blow up of drive section is at: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd ?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fP0303 230-00001.png

The shaft end labeled "16" drives (normally) the right wheel. Thanks.

I would think the problem is in the pinion gear. Look at the wheels ipl

It seems to me if it was a pinion gear problem that neither wheel would be powered, not just one.

Disregard previous post. I am looking at the other IPL now and see the other pinion gears associated with the wheels.

The output shaft is solid and drives both wheels. There is a "ratchet" mechanism for each wheel that allows each to turn independently (faster forward) of the other. The right wheel mechanism is likely broken/worn out. Look at the parts in the pinion kit (PN 55) for the right wheel. You may find you don't need the actual pinion gear (drive gear) which I'm sure is the most expensive part of the kit. If the other parts of the kit are sold separately, you may be able to fix the mower for less cost. BTW, the only way to KNOW what is wrong with the mower is to disassemble the pinion gear mechanism and examine the parts. If all is well with that mechanism, you look further.
