| I have an old MTD model 990 Farm king garden tractor from 1977. I've been having overheating proplems for about a month now. The engine is the original 16hp horizontal briggs model #326432. All of the following has been done to try and correct the problem:
Oil change
The exhaust has been getting so hot I've had to stop cutting grass every half hour or so to let the engine cool down. What are some of the other obvious causes of overheating? |
Follow-Up Postings:
|
| Is there a fan? Is the fan bolted to the crankshaft, or is it belt driven? Is there any shrouding designed to direct the airflow around the cylinder heads? Shrouding is generally made from stamped steel. It can fall off, eventually. Sometimes it gets in the way of maintenance, and it gets removed. |

| ericw is likely on the right track. Remove the blower shroud, you will need t remove the generator belt to do this, and clean the wadded grass and rodent nest from around the cooling fins. That is a very good tractor well worth looking after. |
