Troy-bilt walk-behind, self-propelled, lawn mower:

A fellow brought in the mower named above, and he said he had hit a gas pipe sticking up, in the grass. And now it won't start! (A Briggs and Stratton engine.)
So, i figgered the flywheel key was sheared, so i took it apart to see. Yep, sheared off, wheel turned almost a quarter turn. I replaced the key, put it all back together, and tried it-----nothing! Nada--Zip.
Tried a new spark plug. Nothing. Disconnected the shut-off wire. Not it. Loosened bowl on carb. Gas flows out. no start.Tried starting fluid. Not.
This mower is fairly new, not all crusty with dirt.
Blade not bent. Lower end of crank-shaft not bent, no wiggle. Mating key slots are not worn, or mudged over.
I am open to any and all suggestions! What am i missing?
Maybe Mownie might have an idea of what to do to fix it, or anybody! The Mower Man is stumped!
Engine: B&S Professional, 7.75 175CC OHV. Built:01-09

You don't say if you actually saw a spark.

Baymee: No, i didn't say, but i really didn't think the spark would be missing. After replacing the key, and checking everything else, maybe i got in too big a hurry to get it running again, so i'll have to check that.
But, since i reset the flywheel with a new key and checked the flywheel gap at the coil, tell me what should i do next? Could it have twisted the flywheel/crankshaft relationship? The mower was running at operating speed when the man hit the pipe! And, the key sheared immediately!
I know, that when a running engine gets stopped very quickly, that the forces inherent with the inner workings do get damaged, some severely! The flywheel nut seemed to be tight to the correct torque. It took my good half-inch torque wrench to loosen the nut. and also to retighten it.
So, Monday morning, i'm going to reinspect the fly key, to make sure it is still ok. I'll let ya know what goes with it, and the fix, if it does fix it!
Thanks: Rusty J.
A quick thought: Maybe the shop sold me the wrong type of fly key. I'll have to check that, too!

It's unlikely the crank and flywheel got bent, but anything is possible. Unlike Tecumseh with its varied keys, most of the Briggs small engines use the common rectangular solid key.

It's not rare at all to push the key right out of the slot, or have it fall out, when putting the flywheel back on and misaligning the timing. I put a little grease on the key to hold it in place till I get the flywheel back on. They usually get torqued to about 55 ft. lbs too, quite a bit more than Tecumseh.

If you have the key in right, and a gap of about .012 to the coil, and have spark, I would not suspect the ignition at all, at that point.

Note: Due to my nerves being shot, i gave him his mower back, didn't ask for money, and sent him away! End of case! RJ
