Working on a 17.5hp Briggs and Stratton riding lawn mower..
model 31c700
Ok replaced the connecting rod and the piston rings finally got it running(txs everyone for the help).. But... It is running sounds real good, blows fire from the exhaust port when I take the muffler pipe off. Im not talking a little it shoots out about a foot. Timing is good adjusted the valves about evey which way you can. Shear pin in new. Any ideas?

Okay, so what's your question? Do you expect the fuel to combust without flame? Hint: it should be blue.

Not to sound like a complete tard, but isnt that too much flame?? Shooting out literally a foot from the exhaust?

appreciate your response

It's not shooting out from the exhaust. If the exhaust system (flame arrestor) was on it, you wouldn't see fire. You're seeing flame right off the head of a 17.5 HP engine. I would be surprised if you didn't.

10 years ago or so, I knocked the muffler off of my dad's snapper riding mower. I believe it was an 18 hp Kohler. Yes, there was about a 10 inch blue spike blowing out of the pipe. You could only see it really well late in the evening. Talk about cool when you're a kid. Felt like I was cruising around the yard in a top fuel dragster.

Why was the muffler taken off anyways when it was running fine?

yes,the muffler was off.. guess i should of made that clear. so shooting a foot long flame is normal??

Won't the valves be affected without the backpressure? On motorcycles, it was.

Sounds awesome. Stay away from dry grass though.
