Does anyone know whether the carburetor solenoid / anti-back fire mechanism is vital to engine operation ? If I unplug it will it still run? Thanks

It will not run if unplugged. The valve is designed to stop fuel flow when the engine is spooling down with the key off, this stops fuel from being sucked into the combustion area and being ignited by the hot muffler.
