I have a 650 series Quantum motor. About 1" below the top of the fuel tank neck, there's a hole. If I fill the tank above this hole, bubbles come out of it and the gas goes down into it. My question, is: where is the gas going? Last time I changed the oil (about 10 hours on engine) The oil was gray, thin, and I'm pretty sure it had more gas in it than oil! Could the gas going down the hole be going into the oil reservoir?

No. Fuel contamination of the oil is caused be fuel leaking down in the carb after shutdown. First, install a fuel cut-off valve on the fuel line and turn the fuel off every time you're finished with the mower. Monitor the oil and check for increasing oil level on the dipstick and strong gasoline odor. It is normal for the oil to have a mild gas smell. This should stop the oil contamination but the cause is actually the float or needle inlet valve in the carb, so it'll start again if you forget to turn the fuel off after use. There are some things you can do without getting into the carb; use Sta-Bil Marine stabilizer concentrate (blue) in your gas can all the time. Add 1 to 2 ounces per gallon of Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam to the fuel. Finally, with the engine not running, pick up the carburetor side of the mower about six inches and drop it a few times. Sometimes the float/inlet is just stuck from varnish/gum and this frees it. Then the additives clean it up and prevent recurrence.

Saxman, Thanks for the reply. It's on a wood splitter, but I can do much of what you suggested. Still I'm curious - do you know where that molded tube ends up? When gas goes down it, it doesn't end up on the ground.
