I am looking for a riding lawn mower. Sears advertises a lawn mower with a tight turning radius, 6 degrees. Is this a good feature? The competing brands, JD for instance have a turning radius in the teens.

1st rider? my old rider had a 10ft radius. steering was crazy bad. so i mowed in circles. do you think this feature is desirable for your yard? i would be more concerned about mower performance. how well does it cut. does it mulch well. do you care? how about attachments. do you want a leaf bagger or collection system?

I can't figure out how manufacturers arrive at their claimed turning radius figures. I've never had one (and I've had/have Deere, MTD, & Husqvarna) that would turn ANYWHERE near as tight as the advertisements claimed. If tight turning is important to you, investigate zero-turn (ZTR) machines.

I have no idea what they mean by a 6 degree turning radius. The description is nonsense if you think about a turning circle and it's radius. What you really need to know is how many feet you have to travel forward to perform a complete turn or the turning radius. The length of the radius from a dead stop required to complete a 360 degree turn (a circle).

It sounds incredible but if you Google the terms Sears tight turn mower you can see a video demonstration. I don't know about 8 degrees but it appears to turn with a smaller circle than other mowers. I do feel that would be an advantage, all other things being equal. The Zero turn radius mowers are at least an extra 1-2 thousand dollars more. |
